The Addis plant was built in 1969 for the production of carbon black, which it still produces today. We are proud to note that many local families have had multiple generations build their career working with us.
Carbon black is an engineered product that is essentially elemental carbon.
Carbon black is produced by partially burning hydrocarbon liquids, such as heavy petroleum oils.
A primary use of carbon black is as a reinforcing agent in rubber products, particularly in tires, where it significantly increases resistance to wear and abrasion. It's also used as a black pigment in inks, paints, and other applications — and in protective coatings, plastics, and resistors for electronic circuits.
The Addis plant is regulated by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the United States Environmental Agency.
Since the installation of Tokai’s $225 million Cleaner Air System in December 2023, not only has it reduced sulfur dioxide by 95 percent and nitrous oxide by 90 percent, it has also reduced the temperature of the emissions exiting the stack and increased the moisture content. As a result, although the emissions are now much cleaner, the stack emissions are also more likely to be visible on cold days or when certain atmospheric conditions exist. The vast majority of the visible emissions plume is water vapor or water droplets.
Tokai employs about 85 full-time employees with high-paying jobs.
