Cleaner Air for Our Community
Tokai Carbon and the Addis plant have been a cornerstone of our community since 1969. We're committed to doing business the right way, and since acquiring the plant in 2018, we have invested $200 million in a cleaner, healthier future for the people of Addis. Our state-of-the-art wet scrubbing system, Our state-of-the-art Clean Air System started operation in late 2023…, now makes our air cleaner than ever before.
Pollution Control Project
The pollution control project, mandated by the EPA and Louisiana DEQ, aims to reduce NOx emissions by 90% and SO2 emissions by 95%. This project not only improves air quality but also benefits our local community economically.

NOx emissions reduced by 90%

SO2 emissions reduced by 95%

$200 million investment into air quality improvements

3x cleaner than Louisiana's DEQ standards

Independent Regulatory Testing Confirms Compliance
At Tokai Carbon, environmental responsibility is a top priority. Local regulatory agencies, including the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), have conducted extensive air quality testing around our facility. The results? Zero findings of concern.
This independent verification confirms that our $200 million pollution control project is effectively reducing emissions and maintaining clean air standards well below regulatory limits.
How Our Cleaner Air System Works

-
01
We use a “wet scrubbing” system which captures and removes gases and solid matter from the factory air stream using liquid.
-
02
The gases and solid matter attach to the liquid, which is then separated from the cleaned air stream.
-
03
The cleaned vapor stream escapes from the top of the scrubber tower, while the liquid with the gases and solids collects at the bottom.
-
04
These cleaned air emissions are now more visible than before because they are comprised mostly of steam and water vapor.
-
05
Since December 2023, nitrous oxide emissions are DOWN 90 percent and sulfur oxide emissions are DOWN 95 percent.
-
06
In most cases, the cleaned air vapor stays suspended in the air and rises.
-
07
The color and intensity of these cleaned air emissions may appear different in various atmospheric conditions.
